How can we help?
Most questions are answered below: getting started, billing, safety, and your account. When they run out, there’s a person on the other end of the email.

What is Deficit?
Deficit is a day-by-day weight-cut coach for athletes who compete in weight-class sports. Instead of leaving you to guess at calories and wing the water cut, an adaptive engine charts the exact number to hit every day from now to weigh-in (calories, protein, carbs, water, and sodium), and adjusts as your weight actually moves.
It’s a prescription, not a tracker. You’re told what to do; you don’t count calories yourself.
Which sports does it support?
MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing / Muay Thai, Wrestling, and BJJ on the combat side; Powerlifting and Olympic Weightlifting on the strength side. The engine builds a genuinely different plan for each: different cut ceilings, carb targets, water-cut budgets, and rehydration protocols.
What devices does it run on?
iPhone, on iOS. It’s built natively for iPhone. Android isn’t on the near-term roadmap. If that changes, the waitlist hears first.
How do I get access?
Deficit is in closed TestFlight beta and invites go out in waves. Join the waitlist and tell us your sport. The cohorts we’re building for first get prioritized, and you’ll get an email when your wave opens.
Do I have to log my food?
No. Deficit tells you the target; hitting it is on you. There’s an optional plain-text food log (type what you ate like a note and it does the macros), but it sits alongside the prescription and never replaces the number you’re told to hit. No barcode scanning, no calorie counting required.
Subscription & billing
How much does it cost?
One plan: $9.99 per month (or the local equivalent), auto-renewing, which unlocks the full app. Every purchase runs through Apple using your Apple ID.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. 7 days of full access, granted automatically when you sign up. It needs no payment method to start; it’s a free access period we provide directly, not an App Store introductory offer. When the trial ends, continued access needs an active $9.99/mo subscription.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Since Apple handles billing, you manage and cancel in your Apple ID settings: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Deficit. Cancelling stops the next renewal; your access continues to the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
How do I get a refund?
Apple processes all refunds, not us. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something on our end genuinely broke, email support@getdeficit.com and we’ll do what we can, including a courtesy credit at our discretion.
What happens if my subscription lapses?
Your camp data is preserved (it doesn’t get deleted), but it becomes inaccessible in the app until you re-subscribe. Pick your subscription back up and your history is right where you left it.
I bought a new phone: how do I restore access?
Sign in with the same Apple ID you subscribed with, then use Restore Purchases in the app. Your entitlement follows your Apple ID. If it doesn’t come back, email us.
Your cut plan & coach
How does the plan adjust as I go?
Once a week (about sixty seconds), you confirm your weigh-ins and rate energy, training, and sleep. The engine reads your smoothed weight trend against where the plan expected you to be, then re-charts every remaining day. Changes are capped at ±100 kcal per week so the plan converges smoothly instead of whiplashing off one bad day.
Can the AI coach actually change my plan?
Yes. It has read-write access to your plan. Ask for a looser deficit, more carbs on lift days, or a sweat session moved to Friday, and it runs the math against your sport and remaining timeline, writes the change back, and updates every affected day. Everything it proposes still passes through the same safety ceiling as the engine: it can optimize your plan, it can’t override the limits.
What if I fall behind pace?
The weekly recalibration splits the remaining gap between diet and the final-days water cut. Combat athletes with a longer rehydration window have a water-cut cushion that absorbs part of the gap, so the diet doesn’t have to go dangerously deep. If the math says the target isn’t reachable safely in the days you have left, the app tells you plainly and suggests moving up a class. It won’t pretend an unreachable number is fine.
Does it handle same-day weigh-ins?
Yes. Short rehydration windows (common in wrestling and weightlifting) get a diet-only plan with no water manipulation, plus a short, careful rehydration protocol. The engine sizes the whole cut to the time you actually have between the scale and competing.
Safety
Is cutting weight this way safe?
Weight cutting carries real risk, and no app removes that. What Deficit does is refuse to chart past a hard safety ceiling that neither the coach nor you can override: per-sex calorie floors, a protein floor, water cuts capped to your rehydration window, and banned methods it rejects outright. If a safe cut isn’t possible in the time you have, it says so and won’t build one.
It is not a substitute for a doctor. See the medical disclaimer below.
What are the hard limits?
- Max cut: 8% of body weight for strength sports, 15% for combat sports.
- Calorie floors: 1,500 kcal/day for men, 1,200 kcal/day for women, and never below 75% of your estimated maintenance.
- Protein floor: at least 0.8 g per pound of body weight, every day.
- Banned methods: no diuretics, laxatives, vomiting, or training to heat exhaustion. The coach refuses these every time.
First-time cutters are capped tighter still. These limits are the engine itself, not a warning bolted on top.
Is this medical advice?
No. Deficit is a planning and informational tool. It doesn’t diagnose, treat, or prevent anything, and it’s not a substitute for a physician, dietitian, or athletic trainer. Consult a qualified professional before starting a cut, especially if you have any medical condition, take medication, or are returning from injury. Read the full medical disclaimer in our Terms of Service.
When should I stop and get help?
Stop and seek medical attention right away if you have chest pain, palpitations, severe dizziness, confusion, fainting, blood in urine or stool, severe cramping, vomiting, or a prolonged inability to urinate. Don’t “push through” symptoms because of a weigh-in. No result on the scale is worth your health.
Account & data
How do I delete my account?
Use the in-app account deletion flow, or email support@getdeficit.com from the address on your account. Deletion removes your profile, body-metric history, event data, and coach conversations. Backups are purged within 30 days; a few records (like purchase receipts) are retained only where law requires.
How do I export my data?
Email support@getdeficit.com from your account address and we’ll send your data in a structured, machine-readable format. This is your portability right under GDPR and similar laws.
How do I change my email or password, or recover a locked account?
You can update your credentials in the app’s account settings. If you signed in with Apple, manage that from your Apple ID. Locked out entirely? Email us from the address you signed up with and we’ll verify you and help you back in.
I found a bug: how do I report it?
Email support@getdeficit.com with your device model, iOS version, app version, and the steps that triggered it. Screenshots help. Bugs from beta testers go straight to the top of the list. You’re shaping what ships.
Privacy & security
What data do you collect, and how is it used?
Enough to build and adapt your cut: account details, your profile and body metrics, event data, and coach conversations. We don’t sell your data, don’t show ads, and don’t use ad tracking. The full breakdown (every category, every sub-processor) is in our Privacy Policy.
Is my coach conversation private?
When you message the coach, your message and relevant context are sent to Anthropic (Claude) to generate a reply. Per Anthropic’s current API terms, that data isn’t used to train their general models. We store conversations so the coach has memory across sessions. You can request deletion of specific conversations, or delete your account to remove all of it. If something’s sensitive, don’t put it in chat.
How is my data protected?
Encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, row-level security so your data is reachable only by you and authorized service operations, server-side access controls, and hashed passwords when you’re not using Sign in with Apple. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
Email a real person.
If the answer isn’t above, write to us. We read every message and reply typically within 1–2 business days. For a bug, include your device, iOS version, and app version.
